Pine Tree Secures Funding for Foreclosure Assistance Project

The Maine Housing Counselor Network, MHCN, is hosting a series of free workshops for homeowners who are facing or concerned about foreclosure. The purpose of these workshops is to educate homeowners about the foreclosure process and provide a free, confidential meeting where homeowners can meet one-on-one with a housing counselor, foreclosure attorney, or loan officer to discuss their situation. These event will take place:


July 31, 2008 at Knights of Columbus in Sanford, Maine
November 15, 2008 at Abundant Life Church in Bangor, Maine (located at 1404 Broadway).
December 2008 in Lewiston. Date, time and location to be announced.
January 2009 in Portland. Date, time and location to be announced.
December 2009 in Augusta. Date, time and location to be announced.

The program will consist of a 30 minute presentation to homeowners followed by individual consultations; the presentations will repeat every ˝ hour. There is no cost for homeowners who attend this workshop.

The Maine Housing Counselor Network is comprised of organizations and individuals who offer free confidential housing counseling in communities across the State of Maine. Formally established in 2006, the MHCN holds quarterly meetings, counseling training sessions for its members, and provides a forum for its diverse and far-flung membership to consult with each other on the difficult cases they face and synchronize their efforts to address Maine’s housing crisis. Member organizations include Aroostook Community Action Program, Coastal Enterprises, Inc., Community Concepts, Inc., Consumer Credit Counseling Services, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Kennebec Valley Community Action Program, Legal Services for the Elderly, Maine Attorneys Saving Homes (MASH), MaineHousing, MaineStream Finance, Penquis CAP, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Peoples Regional Opportunity Program (PROP), and York County Community Action Corporation. Many of these organizations are HUD approved housing counselors.

Pine Tree Welcomes New Staff in 2008!

  • Paralegal/Advocate, Paula Fontes, who joined the Portland field staff ealier this year, moved to the Bangor office.
  • Molly Curren Rowles is the new Coffin Fellowship attorney.
  • Jesse Kates-Chinoy, joined PTLA's new Employment Law Pilot Project in July.
  • Necia Chaparin is the Paralegal Advocate for the Foreclosure Assistance Project.
  • Jill Hunter joined the Foreclosure Assistance Project as a new attorney in Lewiston.
  • Amy Perry joined as an advocate for the Volunteer Laywer's Project.
  • Maureen Boston joined PTLA as an attorney in the Family Law Unit in Portland.
  • KIDS LEGAL welcomed attorney, Bob Meggison in the Bangor Office in January.

KIDS LEGAL attorney wins SMPA award!

The 2007 Southern Maine Parent Awareness awards were presented at a luncheon on September 10 at the Libby Wakefield Gallery in Sanford. The 2007 Attorney Award was granted to Sara Meerse, directing attorney of KIDS LEGAL, “for her continued commitment to enrich the lives of children and youth with strengths and disabilities and their families.” Congratulations, Sara!
